The Importance of Extreme Self Care Starting Now and 2018

Extreme self-care is not just basic self-care. Most of us do basic self-care, like going to the dentist, getting a vision exam, or visiting our primary care doctor for a yearly check-up.
Additionally, you might take a Yoga class, treat yourself to a monthly massage, or exercise daily. But there is much more to extreme self-care than these basic practices. It involves a wholistic mindset and advanced practices that nurture your overall well-being so that you can live the life you love now, and throughout the new year to come.

You may think that extreme self-care, especially during the busy holidays, sounds selfish and self-absorbed. You may say, “Why should I put myself at the top of my list, or focus on what I want when others’ needs come first?”

Well, during the past 15 years, I’ve coached hundreds of clients who have wanted to significantly change their lives. Many of them have been able to overcome obstacles and make dramatic changes in their lives.

From this experience, I have identified six of the most common obstacles that consistently prevent people from really enjoying excellent self-care so they can live the life they love.

 Here are these six obstacles:

  1. Your schedule does not reflect your priorities. You find yourself exhausted at the end of the day with very little time to do the things that are important to you.
  2.  You feel drained by certain people, negative environments, and the management of things. You have a long list of things to do, which seemingly is never completed. Certain types of places and people drain your energy, including family members and some friends who call you to complain.
  3. You have a job or career that may still support you financially, but no longer supports you spiritually. You don’t know how to make the change you need, so you continue working the same job year after year.
  4. You have no plan or vision for your life. You are living day by day and making no changes in your health, relationships or career. Your life is becoming dull and boring.
  5. You are missing a supportive community in your life. You feel isolated and disconnected from others who are like-minded, and who could be of great value to you.
  6. Your spiritual well-being gets lost in your busy life. You would like to spend more time in meditation, prayer, and/or yoga but your busy life keeps getting in your way.

Creating the fulfilling life you want takes courage and vision, and your commitment to your own extreme self-care.

I know this to be true, because I spent much of my mid-life living in New York City, working a full-time nursing job in the evening while developing a fashion and event business during the day. I frequently went to bed at 1 a.m. and got up at 7:00 a.m. I was exhausted most of the time, but I just kept going.

It took me years to slow down and learn to say “no” to overworking and attending events that weren’t important to me.

It has only been during the past eight years that I started to seriously integrate extreme self-care in my life and make myself my priority. That is why I am very passionate about this subject!

Hay House author and life coach Cheryl Richardson wrote a wonderful book, “The Art of Extreme Self-Care: Transform Your Life One Month at a Time.”

Cheryl says, “Enjoying a life of extreme self-care means living and working in a soul-nurturing environment, developing a greater appreciation for and connection with nature, doing work that provides an opportunity to express your greatest gifts and talents, and caring for your emotional, physical, and spiritual health in a way that’s aligned with who you are and what you most need.”

This is a challenging concept for most people!

Here are ways you can turn your life around one change at a time.

  1. Ask yourself, “what is showing up in my life, what is working and what needs to change? What is creating stress and unhappiness in my life?”
  2. Get clear on what you really want for your life. Get your priorities straight. Set new priorities that align with what is really important to you.
  3. Identify the old beliefs and patterns that are holding you back from living an empowered, healthy, and spiritual lifestyle.
  4. Hire a coach to help you be accountable for making change, and start your New Year by joining my 4-hour “Get Going – Jump Into 2018” workshop.
  5. Create a plan that will help you improve your health, nutrition, and well-being. If you have health issues, your health care must be one of your main priorities. Tell yourself the truth about the types of foods you are putting into your body, and how you are really treating your body, while expecting it to fuel and support you all day.
  6. Find a community of like-minded people to support, challenge and encourage you to be your best self. This is one of the most important things you can do to create and sustain your well-being.
  7. Increase your spiritual practice with meditation, prayer, and engaging in religious/spiritual community. Online courses offered by The Shift Network, Sounds True, Wisdom University, and many others are available to support you.

Making a decision to change your life begins by becoming aware that you deserve to live a better life, a healthier life, a more abundant life. You then can make a choice to live a life of extreme, fulfilling self-care!

Let go of the past. In 2018, do something different that moves your life forward this year. Let yourself dream, create a vision, make a plan and most importantly, take action!

Create a Crystal Clear Vision for Your Life!

This is the third blog in this series on Life Purpose that helps you get to know yourself better by getting really clear about who you are authentically, and what you desire for your life.

Why is it so difficult to get clear about what we deeply desire?

When we were young, we were creative and dreamed of our bright futures. What happened to those dreams? I believe that as adults, we have forgotten how to play, create, and dream. We focus on so much other stuff that keeps us from listening to the deeper voice inside; stuff like people-pleasing, staying constantly active and stressed, living someone else’s dream, craving more power and/or security, or old beliefs that cripple us with pain, fear and doubt.

So how do we start to get really clear? Here are three practical steps to get more clarity on remembering who you are from your deeper essence. Just write whatever comes up from your mind. Let your mind think really, really big! Do not edit yourself!

Step One: Get Quiet

Sit in a comfortable, quiet place, be still, meditate, and listen to that little inner voice that has been trying to reach you. What do you really want to do next? What is trying to come forth from you? Pay close attention to your recurring dreams, fantasies, intuitions, feedback and longings.

Step Two: Make Note of Areas That Keep Calling Out to YOU

What do you like to do, what interests you, what keeps drawing your attention? What keeps showing up in your life? What keeps calling out to you?

Which magazines do you look at? In which courses or classes are you interested but never allow yourself to take? About which subjects do you daydream? Like opening a day spa or a coffee shop at the beach in Mexico, or using your creative flair with food to become a chef?

Step Three: Record Your Answers to These Questions

Next, while still in your quiet place, let your body and mind relax, and ask your inner self: Let’s go a little deeper.

  • What did you especially love doing when you were a child, before the world told you what you should do? What is uniquely your gifts and talents?
  • Tell me about two of your most challenging life experiences, how have they shaped you?
  • What do you enjoy doing in your life that helps you feel really empowered?
  • What images keep popping into your mind when you think about your passion?

I hope the above questions and writing exercise has helped you get more clarity for living the life you deeply desire. Please consider coming to the Living Boldly From Your Purpose.

3 Ways to Stop Sabotaging Your Success

Stop Sabotaging Your Success

Let’s assume that you’ve identified your true purpose in life and you’re on your way to actualizing it. And then you fall off track. You realize that you have started to sabotage reaching your goals.

Perhaps you’re not keeping up with writing your blog. Perhaps you’re procrastinating on starting an important new project. Maybe you’re not getting regular exercise or losing those extra 20 pounds. Or you’re becoming stressed out or feeling guilty about time away from family. Why?

Here are a few ways to get motivated to get back on track.

Believe You Will Succeed
Many of us lack the confidence we need to pursue our dreams. We tend to doubt ourselves. We can be so afraid of failing that we unconsciously sabotage our success. We all fail at something, but failure is the best way in the world to learn to develop stamina and resilience. Louise Hay, motivational author, says to tell yourself every morning, “I am successful, I am confident, I am supported by people who desire to work with me.”

Surround Yourself with Successful People
It is important to surround yourself with positive thinking people—friends and co-workers who are emotionally and spiritually grounded and making a difference in the world. People who support your dreams and help you find ways to manifest your business or career. Your dreams are fragile. Be careful who you share you deepest desires with.

Align Your Thoughts with Your Goals
Our thoughts and feelings are alive. They are energy, just like everything else in the world. If you are having a hard time manifesting what you deeply desire for your life, it could be because you are struck in an old belief about yourself.

Changing this belief is a critical step in learning to align your thoughts with your life vision or goals. If you want to be successful in your business or in any area of your life you must be aware of your emotions and thoughts. Write down your goals and see them as already happening.

How Can We Avoid Self-sabotage?

Cultivating mindful awareness of our behavior is key to avoiding the pitfalls of self-sabotage. The steps involved are the same as those I teach in my coaching on finding one’s true purpose:

  • Meditate and reflect. Get quiet and connect to the present moment. Acknowledge the critical inner voice whispering in your ear, telling you that you can’t succeed.
  • Sit with a journal or piece of paper. Ask yourself: “What did I do/not do to defeat my progress towards my goal?
  • Pay attention! Over time, the deep reasons behind your self-doubt will be revealed. The truth might at first make you anxious because it means challenging deeply engrained, old and familiar attitudes that we’ve long held about ourselves.

Change Can Be Hard – Don’t Tough it Out Alone

Exploring old, unproductive, limiting thought patterns and changing them can be difficult. And our tendency to back-slide on the best of intentions is pernicious. I can help you take control by helping you develop a Life Purpose Action Plan to move you forward faster. Once you identify and process the root cause of your fear, and learn how to manage it, the self-sabotaging behavior will stop.

2 Steps to Take Before You Successfully Launch a Business

Launch

Often, people come up with an idea for a business, product or service after they have completed a coaching program, participated in a marketing teleconference or attended a motivational seminar. This is great because it’s the first step toward entrepreneurial freedom!

The next step is to define how your business idea fits into your current lifestyle. Use these two power keys to define, refine and align your lifestyle with your ideas and goals.

Power Key 1: Assess Yourself Honestly!

What is showing up in your life right now? What are your main concerns? Do you or your family members have any health concerns? Do you have a solid support system comprised of a spouse, family, and/or close friends? Do you have the time and energy it takes to start a part-time or full-time business? Do you have the financial foundation to stay afloat for 6 to 12 months? What could potentially block your success?

In which areas of your life are you happy or at least satisfied, and which areas do you want to change? No area is more important than another, because a meaningful life is one of balance and fulfillment on many levels.

Self-assessment requires that you evaluate yourself and your lifestyle honestly as if you are an objective observer. It will help you get crystal clear about what you really want, whether you are ready to launch your business right now, and if so, how to design your business blueprint.

Power Key 2: Get Crystal Clear About What You Deeply Desire For Your Life

This next power key involves three practical steps which will help you clearly understand who you are authentically, and what you desire for your life. So how do you really get crystal clear?

Step One: Get Quiet

Sit in a comfortable, quiet place with no distractions. Be still, meditate, relax and just listen to that little inner voice that has been trying to reach you. What is trying to come forth from you?

Step Two: Note Ideas That Keep Calling YOU

What do you like to do, what interests you, what keeps attracting and holding your attention? What patterns keep showing up in your life? In what type of classes are you interested, but never allow yourself to take? What do you daydream about…ideas like opening a day spa, or a gourmet shop at the beach in Martha’s Vineyard, or using your creative flair with food to become a chef?

Step Three: Record Your Answers to These Questions

Next, while still in your quiet place, let your body and mind relax, and tell your inner self: Let’s go a little deeper.

What images keep popping into your mind when you think about your passion? If you had all the money in the world, what would you be doing with it? What do you really want to do next?

Write down whatever comes to your mind, whatever you deeply, seriously long for, not just superficial or material desires. Allow yourself to think really, really big! Do not edit yourself! This exercise will help you create a clearer picture for your next steps in creating your business idea.
